Mika started his motor racing career at the age of six, driving 50cc karts. By the age of nine he was contesting the 100cc Finnish Championship and became Finnish Champion at the age of eleven. It was a title he was to win a further four times. In 1986, Mika completed his National Service, the eleven months he spent in the army precluded him from any serious racing.
